It’s very tempting to browse the urban landscape of “Google Street View” to frame the subject for your next painting. Why travel and sit in the street when you can adjust the angle, and crop the photo all in the comfort of home?
I took these using Google Street View:
The last one (above, Gail’s on Barnes Green) was my favourite, and I set about drawing it with ink directly into watercolour paper. As I added colour it became clear that the perspective was not ‘extreme’ but just plain ‘wrong’!
However, the very first photo was a ‘straight ahead’ (single point) view which seems to have translated into watercolour without problem. On closer inspection there is still the problem that the viewpoint is three or four metres in the air!
